and bonded contractors throughout northern California whom they recommend. Installation rates vary depending on the type of tile and the amount of preparation needed to smooth and make durable the space to be tiled. Ceramic tile is generally less expensive to install than natural stones because it is uniform in size. Saltillo tiles are much more labor intensive as they are softer and can be different thicknesses. Installing granite takes the most expertise.
If you care to do it yourself, installing tile is a simple concept, but it’s a lot of work. Santa Rosa Tile Supply encourages do-it-yourselfers and will walk you through the process, but Frank adds, “A contractor with years of experience will turn out a better job.”
If you purchase your tile at Santa Rosa Tile Supply, you can use their tile-cutting saw. “It’s very safe, Frank reassures, “people use it all the time. However, if your project is very large and you
live far away, you might want to consider renting a saw from a local rental business.” Frank has one caveat for the homeowner installing his own tile in a wet area like a kitchen or bath, “hire a contractor to do the waterproofing before you lay the tile. If the waterproofing is done incorrectly, it can lead to major structural problems years later.”
Treat yourself to a visit to a tile showroom near you to see what is new in the world of tile. You may find just what you need to give your project that special touch that only decorative tile can provide.
Frank Gunnink, who has been in the tile business for 26 years, is the manager of the Ukiah store at 169 Mason Street (off Perkins), 468-8453.
